How to Plan & What to Expect
A very Unique Location to plan your Photo Session, I recently Shot there and here are a few things I learned.
When to Go
Obviously Weekends at the Georgia Aquarium are going to be MUCH busier than Weekdays. What I observed from my many trips there is the later in the day the quieter it is. So if you want to avoid the crowds Book your Session the Last 2 - 3 Hours before Closing or even get there right when they Open. It’s also important to note of any Holidays or Events at the Georgia Aquarium or honestly any Aquarium too. If you can manage it, Weekdays when there’s no School Breaks at places like these are always going to be easier to Navigate. However sometimes things go wrong or the timing isn’t absolutely perfect and it might be a little busier and that is ok! Here’s What to Expect if You Go on a Weekend during Peak Hours
Its BUSY. Bigger crowds, it’ll be louder, more events going on. But in the Midst of the chaos we managed to find moments where display windows were empty and there were breaks in the crowds. And as time went on the crowds started disappearing. Families had to get their kids home, people trying to avoid the traffic. I kid you not the place felt basically empty the last Hour 1/2 that the Aquarium was open.
Why the Aquarium?
Why not?? Have you ever had a Date Night on the Georgia Aquarium?? My Husband and I use to go all the time when we were younger, it was our favorite Date Day. And this past year we got a Membership at the Georgia Aquarium. We would have a day off together and say “hey why not??” On slower days it feels more intimate. The beautiful Blue water with the light shining through, learning something new every time we go, just sitting in the Ocean Voyager room and watching all of the beautiful sea life swim by. It’s so relaxing and it also makes me feel like a kid again so maybe thats why I and so many others love it so much.
How to Prepare
When choosing your outfits my best advice is to stick to Neutrals, there’s already so much going on in the environment around you and I want my clients to stand out amidst the sea life. And also remember a lot of the light will be BLUE, so if you wear a white dress the beautiful blue white will bounce off of it and adds to the whole aesthetic so well. My couple stuck to neutrals and played with different textures. They Wore navy Blues, and Beige colors but also kept it casual and it really gave off a cute Date Night Vibe.
When choosing a Date and Time still expect it to be busy and thats totally ok! Everyone is there to enjoy the same thing and have a ice relaxing day just like you. You just get the added bonus of a super cool and funny Photographer documenting it. When in spaces like this it is super important for my couples to feel less on the spot especially if its busy. My job is to sit back and observe, Sessions like this require little direction. I might recommend turning slightly so the lights are hitting you a little better or move a your placement so it frames well. But this really is going to feel like a cute Date Night at the Aquarium.
Another very important thing to note is the light, obviously Aquariums are relatively Darker Environments, and on top of that I cannot use Flash. Its not a downside at all but there needs to be an understanding at how the photos will look. In some photos I really leaned into the grain look, played with different Hues of the Blue and Green Colors. I am a huge fan of the intimate feel these photos had and if you're a big fan off that as well then this is the perfect spot.
This is a Session that should not be rushed, take it all in, don’t worry about how you look that is my job. The best thing you can do is be present. What I love to suggest to couples is point out fishes that remind you of you and your partner. Thats what my husband and I love to do, give them back stories an everything it the funniest thing I highly recommend it on your next visit.
